Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Where are we staying, and what are the amenities?
A: All of our accommodations are top notch hotels: inns, bed and breakfasts, chateaus, and even castles, all with Old World European elegance. Every room, every night, will have its own bathroom with shower and/or bath. Ladies, don't worry about the facilities. Our accommodations all have elegant, nicely appointed bathrooms. You won't come back from Europe with a bathroom horror story on a Wanderlust tour. We have personally hand picked all of the accommodations.
Q: What about the meals, and, are they included?
A: We guarantee you'll come home still dreaming of the gourmet meals. All breakfasts are included. All dinners are included except for Vienna. For lunch we usually stop somewhere along the way, more often than not, a charming little weinstub along the edge of the river. Lunches are not included in the tour price, but the support van will carry snacks and beverages.
Q: Do I need a passport?
A: Definitely. All participants should carry their passports with them at all times. It's easiest to keep it in your detachable handlebar bag during the day.
Q: What about our luggage?
A: We take care of the luggage transportation for the entire trip. All we ask is that you set it outside your hotel room door by 8:30 a.m. It will then be waiting for you at the next destination. We do tag the luggage for easy identification. Luggage is limited to one suitcase and one carry-on per person.
Q: Can I bring my own bicycle?
A: Of course, but the price of the tour includes the use of our bicycles. If you have never dealt with shipping your bicycle before, we would not recommend it. It can cause delays in your arrival, and the trains have special rules. If you really want to bring your own bike, we can help you with the details.
Q: Can we ride independently?
A: Of course. We will be giving every participant a detailed map of each day’s journey, but we believe you'll find it an even more pleasurable experience to travel with the guide and your travel companions. We ride at a leisurely pace, so we can chat while riding. It's a great way to meet new friends.
Q: Who are our traveling companions?
A: Chances are they are just like you. After all, you have both chosen to participate in this type of wonderful outdoor adventure. Guests are usually between 18 and 65 years of age, and come from all over the world. You will probably make friends with people you may stay in touch with for the rest of your life.
Q: What bike gear do I need to bring with me?
A: If you wish, you can bring your own helmet and gloves. However, we supply helmets and new gloves. The gloves are yours to keep.
Q: What about bicycle helmets?
A: We always recommend wearing a helmet for safety. However, in most of Europe there is no helmet law. So, we leave it up to you. This situation is spelled out in our Release of Liability form.
Q: What about trip insurance?
A: We can't stress this enough. Travel and health/accident insurance are highly recommended. You can visit travelinsured.com for more information.
Q: How do I access money?
A: By far, the best way is the ATM. Check with your bank before you leave to make sure that your debit card will work in Europe. You should also let them know that you will be using the card while on your trip, so that when they see overseas activity on the card, they won't put a freeze on your account. Traveler’s checks are not recommended. You don't want to waste your valuable vacation time looking for a bank to cash them. ATM's are fast and they are everywhere we are going.
Q: What should I wear on and off the bike?
A: On the bike, traditional bike shorts with the padded seat will give you the most comfort. T-shirts are fine, biking shirts are better. Tennis shoes are fine. We supply ponchos in case of rain. Off the bike, just wear what you would at home for warm weather. Be comfortable! Dinner dress is evening casual. While no formal attire is necessary, a pair of dress slacks is recommended at several of the dinners.
Q: What type of weather can I expect?
A: Late spring and summer are perfect for bike riding. Days are warm and dry with an occasional shower in the late afternoon. Mornings and evenings are slightly cooler so bring a light jacket. If it rains, we usually don the ponchos and go for it. In our experience, sometimes even bad weather can make for a very memorable experience. The support van is always available if necessary.
Q: What kind of shape do I need to be in?
A: Average to good shape will work fine. Most people are a little intimidated by the distances, but in our experience you can do much more than you think you can. People are always amazed when we are halfway to our destination before they realize it. We understand that you don't want to be too tired to enjoy the destinations, so we take it leisurely and enjoy the magnificent scenery.
