2008 Mosel/Rhine Castle Bicycle Tours begin on the following dates:
August 29th, Sept 6th

Itinerary
Day 1 - We begin our adventure at a wonderful family owned and operated weinstub just outside of Trier. Weingut Karlsmuhle, located in the Ruwertal, is a world-renowned winery where we will have our first of many wine tastings during the tour. A wine garden, a working water wheel, and even a stream that flows under our rooms make this a special place you won't forget. Before dinner you can walk through the vineyards, or simply relax with a glass of wine watching trout jump from the pond next to the water wheel. The best way to get to Karlsmuhle, is to fly to Frankfurt, then take the train to Trier. The train station in Frankfurt is right at the airport. Please contact us to work out the details. Once in Trier, we will pick you up at the train station and bring you to Karlsmühle, where we begin our bicycle adventure the next morning.

Day 2 - Karlsmühle to Brauneberg, 48 km (30miles). Our bike path takes us along the meandering Mosel River, through sleepy little villages and beautiful vineyards. We stop at Piesport for a sip or two of the very famous Piesporter wine, then off again to Brauneberg. Tonight’s dinner is one of those meals you will never forget. We start with an afternoon wine tasting at our inn, then move on to a magnificent 5 course, 5 wine gourmet dinner, all in an underground wine cellar. Our rooms for the night are just above the cellar in another family owned and operated weinstub. This is a day to discover what the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines are all about.

Day 3 - Brauneberg to Zell, 40 km (25miles). After breakfast, we stop at the very picturesque twin villages of Bernkastel-Kues. The buildings on the main square of Bernkastel are an excellent example of fachwerk, the half-timbered architecture so popular throughout Germany. It has a real "Disneyland" atmosphere. After many photos, we move on to Traben-Trarbach, another twin village, one on either side of the river. Our leisurely afternoon ride takes us to the charming village of Zell. Stroll along the hauptstrasse, or main street, and the riverside. Be sure to sample the Schwarz Katz wine, Zell's claim to fame.

Day 4 - Zell to Cochem, 37km, (22 miles). Today we travel along the western side of the Mosel for most of the morning. We cross the river just before Beilstein, to visit this tiny medieval village, with the narrowest streets imagineable. Then on to Cochem, to see one of the grandest sights on the entire Mosel, the Reichsburg Cochem. This awesome castle dominates the hillside high above the town. This afternoon, after we get settled into our hotel, we'll go on a tour of this spectacular castle. This evening, we'll dine in old world German elegance at our hotel's restaurant.

Day 5 - Cochem to Moselkern, 14km (9 miles). Today's ride is very short, but we also have a hike planned for the afternoon. Our short bike ride takes us to a 'wunderbar' country inn located near the amazing castle of Burg Eltz. After lunch, we'll take a short bike ride to the trailhead of a beautiful forest path that will lead us to Burg Eltz. This is the best way to arrive at Burg Eltz, and will put you in the proper frame of mind to discover this spectacular unruined castle. Situated in the middle of a steep gorge, Burg Eltz is truly one of Europe's most breathtaking sights.

Day 6 - Moselkern to Kamp Bornhofen, 58km (36 miles). Today may be one of those days you may never forget! As we leave Treis, we head toward the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine Rivers. This meeting of two great rivers is truly a sight to behold. We'll stop for a while and enjoy the park surroundings where street musicians are always performing. Then we head south along the mighty Rhine stopping briefly in the old Roman city of Boppard, before taking a ferry across the river to Burg Liebenstein. Yes, we are spending the night in an old and haunted German castle! After our late afternoon dinner at the castle, we'll cross the river again, to the village of St. Goar, for the most spectacular night of the year!! The St. Goar wine festival is the highlight of all the wine festivals in the Rheingau. You'll have the time of your life, as we sample the wines and listen to the music. Then to top it off, a tremendous fireworks display!! The 'Rhine on Flames' fireworks are the most spectacular in all of Germany. The display lasts for approximately 1 hour, and will leave you breathless.

Day 7 - Kamp Bornhofen to Oberwesel, 18km (12 miles). After our festive night, we'll start out a little later, as we have a short ride to our next castle home. Burg Schoenburg is an elegant 4 star hotel that we are lucky enough to enjoy for the day. High above the town of Oberwesel, this mighty medieval castle will impress you as we dine on a magnificent old world German feast in the castle's restaurant. The ambience will make it easy for you to imagine what it must have been like during the robber-baron days of medieval Germany. This night in Burg Schoenburg is truly a night you will never forget.

Day 8 - After breakfast, we say 'auf wiedersehen' and will be happy to take you to the train station, or back to the Frankfurt airport, or you can join us for a special Oktoberfest excursion to Munich. Call or e-mail for more details about this exciting add on tour.
